Most people know what a locksmith is. For those who do not, a locksmith is the person that can help you out with any lock and key related issues. Most locksmiths can fix, pick and replace all the locks in your home or car as well as replace or replicate your keys. This said, there are things that your trustee locksmith doesn’t tell you.
1- Police work
A number of locksmiths do undercover police for work for the local police force. Often locksmiths make keys for the police in order for them to set up surveillance equipment or put bugs in place.
2- Deadbolts and windows
If your door is positioned by a window or even has windows on it then dead bolts are not a good choice of lock. Anyone wanting to get in can break the window and open the door. Other locks such as cylinder locks are safer options.
3- Scam artists
Finding a locksmith online or in the phone book can be a risky choice as a lot of them are scam artists. Not only can they overcharge you for their services but they can also steel from you.
4- Car dealers
A number of car salesmen are also scam artists. They will make you believe that no one else but them can duplicate the key to your car. This is in fact untrue. A number of locksmiths are trained to duplicate automobile keys and in most cases, they will charge half the price.
5- Cheap locks from larger stores are unreliable
People often go to big convenience stores that sell locks, as they are cheaper. Be warned, most locks in these stores are mass produced and therefore very poor quality.
6- Locksmiths are meant to check their clients identifications
Although they are meant to, most don’t as clients often lock their ID’s in the area they are locked out of! This doesn’t mean they shouldn’t check once you are in.
7- Keys that are not meant to be duplicated are duplicated all the time!
There are a number of keys that are stamped: “Do not duplicate”. In fact, locksmiths duplicate these keys on the daily.
8- If you buy a new home, change the locks
It is likely that there is a master key for your home somewhere in the world. This key was probably made by the estate agent helping to sell your house. Although it is unlikely anything will happen you are better safe than sorry. Changing your locks can ensure nothing happens to your home.
9- Don’t be greedy and buy a locked safe at a car boot or market
You will spend a huge amount of money buying it, then more to open it to probably find nothing. In nearly every case, there is not a big pot of fold at the end of a rainbow just wasted money and crushed dreams!
10- Be careful if you are going through personal issues at home
A number of cases are reported where a couple is divorcing and one party decides to change the locks whilst their soon to be ex spouse still legally lives there. A locksmith is legally allowed to this but it is worth keeping in mind that this is in actual fact a regular occurrence so be warned!
